This project was an absolute joy to work on. I worked with the children from St John’s Primary School on Queens Parade in Clifton Hill. I chose the theme as it was uplifting to the thousands who pass by daily. I had been encouraging a loved one who was going through a time of darkness and recognised how important it is to never give up hope. I remembered St Paul’s message in the Bible:
“And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.” – I Corinthians 13:13
No what your spiritual beliefs these virtues are valuable. Charity basically means love. As a coincidence the school was founded by the Sisters of Charity. Many of the older churchgoers were thrilled by the mural and the kids were quite profound in their visual interpretations. A small child drew a beautiful arch for me, I asked him about and he told me that it was the shape of love. The nuns are my favourite detail in the work. I often take a detour to pass the mural and smile every time.
